In 1901 the area was purchased by Richard Stanton and subdivided to create a garden suburb, in the hopes this would help to combat the spread of the bubonic plague by encouraging fresh air in the city. He named the area Haberfield after his family in England. Haberfield has three primary schools but no High Schools. Two of the schools are Public Schools; being Haberfield Public School and Dobroyd Public School.
