Ashfield
Ashfield is a suburb in the Inner West of Sydney, is located approximately 9 kilometres south-west of the Sydney central business district and is the administrative centre for the local government area of the Municipality of Ashfield.
History
Ashfield was originally part of a larger land grant called Ashfield Park, named by Robert Campbell whose father was the laird of Ashfield in Scotland. The arrival of the railway here saw a significant increase in the population and Ashfield soon became a desirable place to live compared to the business of the City.
Transport
Ashfield is located at the intersection of two major roads. Parramatta Road runs from Sydney city to Parramatta and ultimately continues on as the Great Western Highway through Penrith and the Blue Mountains. Liverpool Road runs from Parramatta Road at Ashfield to Liverpool and ultimately continues on as the Hume Highway.
Ashfield railway station is on the main suburban railway line of the Sydney Trains network and it is also well served by buses.
Recreation
The shopping area and Ashfield Mall are located near the station, as well as a few cafes. Ashfield Park is home to a children’s playground, sporting green and a bowls club. Pratten Park boasts sports fields and tennis courts, and there is Hammond Park, Yeo Park and Ashfield Aquatic Centre, with three swimming pools.
Schools
Ashfield is home to Ashfield Public School, St Vincents and Yeo Park are the local primary schools. Ashfield Boys High, Bethlehem College and De La Salle College are the local high schools.
